7 day Garden Route - Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Mosselbay, Stellenbosch

Day 1

I will be at the airport upon your arrival. You are staying at the City Lodge in the Waterfront. B/B www.citylodge.co.za

Day 2

This will be a half day. I will show you the city centre and its Malay quarter and the Cape of Good Hope Castle . The afternoon we will leave for Robertson, which is in our Cape Wine lands area. Day 3

We leave Robertson and drive into the Karoo, a semi-desert, to Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of S Africa. Along the way we see succulents and aloes and small fruit farms, situated along the dry riverbeds. Once there, we will visit an ostrich farm before retiring to our hotel, The Thorntree. Day 4

After visiting the Cango Caves, we leave the Karoo behind, cross over the Outeniqua Mountains, to the coast. We travel through George and Wilderness and arrive in Knysna. This is the centre of the Garden Route. The town lies on the estuary and it also has a little Waterfront, called Knysna Quays. www.knysnaquays.co.za There will be time for a bit of shopping before going on a sunset cruise on the lagoon. Day 5

The Garden Route is famous for its scenic beauty, with many flowers and forests and mountains. On our way to Port Elizabeth today, we will visit our premier seaside town, Plettenbergbay. Then we will take a little walk in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The Tsitsikamma Forest is the largest indigenous forest in South Africa. We will also view an 800 year old Yellowwood tree. We arrive in Port Elizabeth and are staying at the Courtyard Hotel, situated at the seafront. B/B 3 hours 270 KM www.citylodge.co.za

Day 6

We will leave after breakfast and an hour later, visit the Addo National Park for a quick but exiting visit to the elephant park, where there are more elephants per sq. foot than anywhere else. Then we continue till we get to Kariega Game Reserve at about lunchtime. You will leave on your first game drive, late afternoon, in an open Landrover, very close to the animals. Day 7

Again you will enjoy a game drive in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Full board. Kariega Lodge.

Day 8

After your last game drive and breakfast we depart Kariega and drive along the N2, past East London to Umtata, the centre of the old Homeland, Transkei. This is the birthplace of Mandela and still a very rural part of South Africa. We see rolling hills and many huts with cattle and goats roaming around. Tag 9

After breakfast we will visit the Mandela Museum in Umtata before continuing towards the coast and Port St Johns. The area is hilly and forested. We arrive at Umngazi River Mouth where we will spend the night. www.umngazi.co.za D/B/B 108 KM 2 hours

Day 10

After our breakfast we travel along a minor road with many traditional villages along the way. Its very rural and pretty. After a while we join the N2 national road and continue along the coast where we pass many small holiday and seaside resorts – this is known as the Hibiscus Coast. We arrive late afternoon in Durban. We are staying at the Southern Sun Hotel at the Marine Parade. B/B 5 hours 360 KM www.tsogosunhotels.com

Day 11

Today I will show you this beautiful colonial city. We will visit the Indian Market, where we will also get a glimpse of the traditional African market, then its the city centre with its colonial style City Hall and the harbour entrance.
